I love to read novels that are set in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. I marvel at how those caught up in the war and before managed…those fighting and those left at home. Rosie Clarke has written a wonderful series called The Workshop Girls. This series is set in London right before and during the war. “Lizzie’s Secret” is about Lizzie Larch, a twenty-year-old hat maker in London. She is well liked and has acquired a good job at a shop where her designs are selling well. Unbeknownst to Lizzie, she has a secret. This secret has been kept from her by her aunt and uncle with whom she has stayed since her parents’ passing. When she is finally told of this nightmare, consequences of this secret occur which are tragic for Lizzie. The story is one of triumph in the face of adversity and the unflagging spirit of one girl, determined to better her life.

I love the way Ms. Clarke brings her characters to life. I also am enamored by the British way of life and their resourcefulness in the face of wartime deprivation. I will be reading all the books in this series. This is my favorite genre and Ms. Clarke’s writing truly fits my interest.

Lizzie Secret Workshop Girls Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Rosie Clarke Juliette Burton Rosa Audio Books Reviews

Good read. Interesting twists and turns. Thoughtful development of the characters. Hopefully this author will continue to produce more good novels.
As I had never read any books from this Author I found it to be a story you could not put down , the story was about how a girl called Lizzie got on with her life and worked through her difficulties very good story will certainly read the next book in this series.
This was a good book, and I liked the stories and characters, but part of the storyline was almost exactly the same as in The Girls of Mulberry Lane. Just the names were different. That was a tad disappointing. But overall, it held my interest, and I'm on to the next in the series.
A somewhat unbelievable story. From nowhere, the heroine starts as an apprentice in hat-making and within no time has been promoted to top designer with shares in the business. From then on, it goes from glory to glory ... she suddenly gets money from various sources, inherits a house, business and other property and generally rockets to the top.
This is a nice book in every sense of the word. I found the characters a bit shallow but it has a good story line. It is a comfortable read and does not disappoint. Maureen Rowland-Aitken, johannesburg, South Africa
Enjoy some British vocabulary as you get to know Lizzie who develops from a young orphan growing up with a kind and supportive Uncle and a very dominating and unkind Aunt.. Her story begins with a memory the details of which Lizzie can not recall and yet one which terrifies her for an unexplained reason. When her Uncle dies, her life takes a twist which in many ways was very good for Lizzie. Her skills as a milliner create success for her and supportive friends help her start to take charge of her life. World War II and marriage are coupled with information from her Aunt that create a devastating bump in the life of a young woman.
This book is dreadful. I almost always finish books, so I persevered, but skimmed 3/4s of it. The plotline is incredibly predictable, except for the end, where the author wraps everything up into a happy ending which is just too unbelievable. The characters are shallow, simplistic and have no depth. But the worst part is the writing - it is just awful. Here's an example, when a character discusses with her mother the possibility of her grandmother moving into a home ''You mustn't ever let her go into one of those awful old people's homes', Beth's throat was tight with emotion. 'We need to look after her, love her and cherish her'.' Oh please!! Cliched, hackneyed writing at it's worst. I love historical novels, including feelgood ones, but this is one series to avoid. Just excruciating.
